Norway, Maine Teen Driving Guide

What parents and teens need to know about getting a driver’s license in Norway, ME: six steps, from the first class to the insurance call.

Requirements checked: October 2026, against official state licensing sources: Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

Practice plan for Norway

Your state sets the hours. Where you spend them is up to you. What’s around Norway to practice on, and when:

Roads to practice on

Highways
US-302 within 15 miles. Save the first merge for a quiet Sunday morning on US-302: one on-ramp, one exit, and back. Then add a weekday at a busier time.
Traffic signals
5 signalized intersections within 5 miles. Enough to start on left turns at a signal. Save busy multi-lane intersections for a trip into a larger town.
Roundabouts
None within 5 miles. If you’ll drive somewhere that has them, practice one before it matters.
Rail crossings
14 within 5 miles. Talk through it the first time: look both ways, never stop on the tracks.
The six driving environments to cover

Seasons and light

Snow
About 76 inches a year. After the first real snowfall, find an empty lot and practice braking and recovering from a slide.
Rain
78 days a year with measurable rain or snow. Count a wet drive as its own lesson: longer following distance, earlier braking.
Daylight
Earliest sunset 4:02 p.m. (December 8); latest 8:29 p.m. (June 20). Night hours are easiest to log from November through January, when the drive home after 4:15 p.m. is already in the dark.
