    Driver’s ed in Michigan

    Requirement
    Required. Segment 1: at least 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction plus 4 hours of observation, over at least 3 weeks. Segment 2: at least 6 hours of classroom (max 2 hours per day), taken after 3 months on the Level 1 license and 30 logged supervised hours (2 at night). Online-only courses and parent-taught or home-school courses are not accepted.

    Get a Michigan learner’s permit

    Minimum age
    14 years 9 months (Level 1 Learner's License; Segment 1 enrollment at 14 years 8 months)
    The test
    Vision test at a Secretary of State office; knowledge instruction and testing are part of Segment 1 driver education rather than a separate state knowledge test.
    What to bring
    Segment 1 Certificate of Completion, proof of Social Security number, citizenship or legal presence, identity, and two Michigan residency documents (originals or certified copies), with a parent or guardian present to sign.

    Practice driving with a parent

    Supervised hours
    50 hours, including at least 10 at night (30 hours, including 2 at night, must be logged before Segment 2)
    Time on the permit
    6 months on the Level 1 license

    Pass the road test

    Minimum age
    16 (Level 2 Intermediate License)
    The road test
    Taken through independent driver testing businesses approved by the Secretary of State (fees set by the business); it includes a vehicle inspection, a basic control skills test, and an on-road test, and the teen must be at least 15 and accompanied by a parent or guardian with no violations or at-fault crashes in the prior 90 days.

    Know the rules for new drivers

    Restrictions
    Level 2: no driving 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and no more than one passenger under 21 (immediate family excepted), unless accompanied by a parent/guardian or licensed adult 21+ or driving to/from work or an authorized activity.

    Add your teen to your car insurance

    When
    Call your insurer as soon as your teen gets a permit. Some policies cover permit drivers automatically and others need them listed; rates usually rise once your teen is licensed.
    Save money
    Ask about good-student and driver-training discounts, and compare quotes before your teen gets the first license.
