    Get an Arkansas learner’s permit

    The test
    Written knowledge test and vision screening administered by the Arkansas State Police (an ASP-90 vision referral form from an Arkansas optometrist is needed if the vision screening is failed).
    What to bring
    Proof of identity (e.g., original birth certificate or U.S. passport) and a parent/guardian who assumes financial responsibility (in person or via a notarized ASP 33 form); proof of Arkansas residency is required if the birth certificate is from certain neighboring states.

    Practice driving with a parent

    Supervised hours
    Arkansas does not set a minimum number of supervised practice hours.
    Time on the permit
    At least 6 months, with no serious accidents or violations in the 6 months before applying for the intermediate license.

    Pass the road test

    Driving skills test administered by the Arkansas State Police, scheduled at telegov.egov.com/aspdlskills; testing is offered in all counties.

    Know the rules for new drivers

    Intermediate license: no driving 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. unless with a licensed driver 21+ or going to/from school, church, or work or in an emergency, and no more than one unrelated passenger under 21 unless a licensed driver 21+ is in the front seat; no cell phone use.

    Add your teen to your car insurance

    When
    Call your insurer as soon as your teen gets a permit. Some policies cover permit drivers automatically and others need them listed; rates usually rise once your teen is licensed.

    Ask about good-student and driver-training discounts, and compare quotes before your teen gets the first license.
